A follower is not a reader. About one in seventy of yours will see your next post.

Social media management South Africa business owners can genuinely hand over: eight posts a platform a month, written, designed, scheduled, and the comments actually answered.

Consistency beats brilliance, and it is cheaper to keep up.

Why social media is a memory business, not a sales channel

The number every agency reports is followers, and it stopped meaning very much some years ago. A Facebook page post now reaches somewhere around 1.4% of the people who chose to follow it - about 137 people out of every 10,000. You did not lose them. The platform simply stopped showing them to you unless you pay, or unless the post earns its way out on its own merits.

So if the follower list is not the audience, what is the account for? The most useful answer in marketing science is uncomfortable and freeing at the same time. At any given moment, almost nobody who will eventually buy from you is buying today - the Ehrenberg-Bass work most often quoted puts it at around 95% out of market at any one time. Almost everything you post is being seen by people who are not going to do anything about it now.

That is not failure. That is the job. Social is where a business stays recognisable to the people who will need it in four months, so that when the day comes you are the one they think of first rather than the one they have to go and find. Which means the thing to optimise is not this week's engagement. It is whether somebody scrolling at speed knows the post is yours before they read the name on it.

And there is a lever most businesses never pull, because it is not about working harder. Reach now comes from the recommendation engine rather than the follower graph, and it is wildly uneven by format: short video runs at around 9% reach where a feed post runs at half a percent. Choosing the right format on a Tuesday beats posting twice as often for a year.

1.37%

Of a Facebook page's followers see a given post. Roughly 137 people in every 10,000 who deliberately chose to follow you.

9% vs 0.5%

Organic reach on short video against a standard feed post, early 2026. The same effort, aimed differently, reaching eighteen times as many people.

~95%

Of buyers are not in the market at any one moment. Most of your posting is not a sales attempt - it is a deposit against a decision months away.

The discipline

Four things have to happen, and only two of them are the post

A post that fails usually failed at the first stage or the third, and almost nobody looks there - because the two invisible stages are about mechanics and memory, and the two visible ones are the ones that feel like the work.

  1. Reach

    It gets shown at all

    • Format over frequency
    • Native to the platform
    • Posted where the people are
    • Never a bare link

    This holds it up

  2. Stop

    It survives the first second

    • The image carries it alone
    • A first line that is not a warm-up
    • No caption doing rescue work
    • Legible on a phone at arm's length

    They see this

  3. Recognise

    They know it is you

    • The same colours every time
    • A voice that does not drift
    • Assets used consistently
    • Recognisable with the name covered

    They see this

  4. Remember

It is still there in four months

    • Linked to a real situation
    • Repetition, not novelty
    • Consistent over clever
    • Answered when they reply

    This holds it up

The fourth stage is the one that pays and the one nobody can show you a screenshot of this month. It is also why we would rather run an account quietly and consistently for a year than deliver a spike in March that nobody remembers by June.

What arrives

Everything on this list is yours at the end of it

Not a summary of what we will think about. The actual files, documents and decisions that land on your desk, stage by stage, and every one of them is yours to take anywhere afterwards.

  1. 01

    Reach

    • Format over frequency
    • Native to the platform
    • Posted where the people are
    • Never a bare link

A monthly plan that picks the format the platform is currently rewarding for each idea, rather than the same square graphic pushed to four platforms at once.

    You walk away with

    • A posting timetable per platform, built on when your audience is actually there
    • Posts scheduled and published for you, not handed over as a folder of files
    • Each format native to its platform rather than one asset cropped five ways
  2. 02

    Stop

    • The image carries it alone
    • A first line that is not a warm-up
    • No caption doing rescue work
    • Legible on a phone at arm's length

Eight posts per platform per month, written and designed, each one built so the image earns the stop on its own - because the caption is truncated and most people never expand it.

    You walk away with

    • Original artwork for every post, at that platform's organic specification
    • Hooks written to survive a truncated caption, because most of them are
    • Short-form video and simple motion wherever the platform rewards it
  3. 03

    Recognise

    • The same colours every time
    • A voice that does not drift
    • Assets used consistently
    • Recognisable with the name covered

Everything produced against your brand guide and your written voice guide, so a year of posts looks like one business rather than twelve moods.

    You walk away with

    • A written visual system, so every post is unmistakably yours at thumbnail size
    • Profile artwork, highlights and bios kept current across every account
    • A content mix agreed up front, so the account is not only ever selling
  4. 04

    Remember

    • Linked to a real situation
    • Repetition, not novelty
    • Consistent over clever
    • Answered when they reply

Comments and messages answered on weekdays, so the account behaves like a business somebody could actually buy from, and the memory has something to attach to.

    You walk away with

    • Comments and messages answered on weekdays, in your voice
    • One monthly report: what went out, what worked, and what changes next month
    • Every post approved by you before it is published

Measurement

How you will know it is working

Followers are the least useful number on a social account, so they are not the headline. Social media management South Africa businesses get value from is reported on whether it moved anyone, not on how many people it reached.

What we report on

  • Reach and engagement per post, and which formats actually earn attention
  • Clicks through to your site or your product pages
  • Messages and comments answered, and how quickly
  • Which posts are worth repeating, and which content types to stop making

Get social media scoped for your business

Tell us what is happening now and you get a written scope with a price on it, from the person who would do the work.

If we think this is not actually your problem, we will say so on the call rather than after the invoice. It costs us the job often enough to be worth saying out loud.
